Autism is a brain development disorder that generally becomes apparent in children by the age of three. It affects a child's ability to communicate (verbally and nonverbally), form relationships with other people, and respond appropriately to the external world. Autistic children may also exhibit repetitive behaviors or narrow, obsessive interests. The ideal treatment plan coordinates therapies and interventions that target the core symptoms of autism. For many children, symptoms improve with treatment and with age.
