Autism is a brain disorder that affects approximately 3 to 6 out of every 1,000 children. It generally becomes apparent in children by the age of three and affects their ability to communicate, form relationships with others, and respond appropriately to the external world. Although there is no cure for autism, therapies and behavioral interventions are available to target the core symptoms of the condition. For many children, symptoms improve with treatment and with age.
