Autism Spectrum Disorders Information

Disorders within the autism spectrum include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, classical autism, and others. But what is the autism spectrum and how do you know if your child has one of these disorders?

The autism spectrum includes a range of developmental disorders. All children with such conditions demonstrate problems with:

  • Repetitive behaviors or interests
  • Social interaction
  • Verbal and nonverbal communication.
  •
In addition, they will often have unusual responses to sensory experiences, such as certain sounds or the way objects look. Each of these symptoms can range in severity and can present in each individual child differently. For instance, a child may have little trouble learning to read but exhibit extremely poor social interaction.

Disorders in the autism spectrum can often be reliably detected by the time the child is three years old, and in some cases as early as 18 months. The appearance of any of the warning signs of autism spectrum disorder is reason to have a child evaluated by a professional specializing in this area.
