Autism typically becomes apparent in children by the age of three. It is a brain disorder that causes a child to have problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, obsessive or repetitive routines and interests, and impaired social interaction. There is no cure for the condition, but therapies and behavioral interventions that are designed to remedy specific symptoms can bring about substantial improvement. Scientists aren't certain what causes autism, but it's likely that both genetics and environment play a role.
