Autism is a brain disorder that occurs in childhood, generally by the age of three. Children with this condition have problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, impaired social interaction, and obsessive or repetitive routines and interests. The exact causes of autism are not known, but scientists believe that the disorder may be linked to both genetics and environment. Although there is currently no cure, treatment plans (which consist of therapies and behavioral interventions) are designed to remedy specific symptoms.
